Films from FLIP Exposed

Films from FLIP were included in the January 2006 issue of DIGIT magazine, a leading resource for creative professionals, in print and online, from graphic and 3D Design, to animation, video, effects, web and interactive design. The films feature on a CD in the magazine alongside the likes of Nizlopi's 'JCB Song' video (by Monkeehub) and showreels by top national and international graphics companies.

The featured FLIP films were: 'Beach Buoy' and 'Onions' by Natalie Ann Hinchley; 'Bobble and Scarf' by Gary Evans; 'Little Angel' by Screenburn Limited ; 'Spaghetti Terrestris' by Jonathan Reynolds ; 'Doubled Up' by Samantha Moore ; 'The M Man' by Spark and Zoom and 'Gloria' by Richard Dyson.

Peter McLuskie, FLIP Festival Programmer said, 'We are thrilled for the animators. DIGIT has a distribution of over 15,000 which means great exposure for these up and coming animators and animation studios. Recognition on this level is proof that the animation industry in the West Midlands is growing and is an acknowledgment of the talents of the animators involved'.

The programme includes work by animators from across the West Midlands region, using a variety of styles and techniques, from clay animation, to hand-drawn and computer-generated.

FLIP Director Peter McLuskie said, 'We are thrilled to be screening the best of FLIP 2005 in mediamaker's fantastic new Film & Digital Media Centre and the Music Hall Gallery in Shrewsbury. We are hoping this will form the basis for a series of collaborations between mediamaker and Light House, with cross-screenings of film and animation produced in the midlands'.

Catch FLIP at The Old Market Hall Film & Digital Media Centre and The Music Hall Gallery, The Square, Shrewsbury until Sunday, 20 November. Tel: 01743 281281 for details or visit www.mediamaker.tv

Mutant Boy by Neil Webber: Greedy little bobby loves to pig out on junk food, but his local shop is next door to a nuclear power station. After stuffing himself to the gills with radioactive treats bobby is suddenly transformed into a hideous atomic mutant boy.

Little Angel by Stuart Barnecutt and David Ledsam of Wolverhampton-based animation studio Screenburn Limited: Fearing another trip through hell's gates, the stork drops off 'baby demon' in heaven instead. Little Devil grows up in an angelic family but despite his best intentions good deeds always seem to go wrong.

Animation Students have the X-Factor

The Winner of this year’s Student Competition at the FLIP Animation Festival is Richard Dyson (UCE), for his film ‘Gloria’. Runners up are Natalie Ann Hinchley (UCE), for her film ‘Beach Buoy’ and Gary Evans (Staffs) for ‘Bobble and Scarf’. The winning films were screened in front of a packed cinema audience at the FLIP festival on Saturday 29 October. Eighteen short-listed student films were also screened at the festival. Richard was presented with a voucher for HMV and the runners up received posters donated by animation studio Sumo Dujo productions.

The Student Competition brought together work by graduates from three prominent midlands animation courses. Students from the University of Wolverhampton, Staffordshire University and UCE (University of Central England) submitted work to be considered for the Student Competition and Screening.

An independent judging panel consisted of: Nicola Scurlock (PS Creative, animation studio originally from Birmingham, now based in rural Worcestershire); David Ledsam (Co-director of Wolverhampton-based animation studio Screenburn Ltd); Chris Randall (animation director) and Ruth Fielding (Lupus Films, Channel 4 consultant and NESTA talent scout).

Wendy Jones, Co-ordinator of the Student Competition said, ‘The Student Competition provided an entertaining and valuable experience for animation students and showcased the wealth of animation talent in the region. Light House is delighted to host the first student animation awards for the midlands and look forward to next year’s competition as part of the FLIP Animation Festival 2006’.

Wish Comes True for Budding Animators

In June 2005, Light House launched its Animation Bursary Scheme; a new initiative aimed at supporting and developing animators in the West Midlands region. The Bursary Scheme provided production resources, skills development and mentoring to three recent animation graduates from the region: Sam Walsh, Jonathan Reynolds and Natalie Ann Hinchley. The scheme enabled them to produce a high quality short animated film, which could then be showcased at festivals and events. This will help to boost their portfolios and assist them in getting a foothold in the animation industry. Samantha Moore, animator, from the University of Wolverhampton was the Production Consultant and Mentor to all three animators.

One of the beneficiaries, Natalie Ann Hinchley said, ‘The bursary was an opportunity to make an animation to enter into festivals and put on my showreel…I met some very talented fellow animators and have made what I consider to be my best work so far’.

The completed films will premiere at Light House’s FLIP Animation Festival (27-29 Oct 2005) as part of the Regional Showcase event on Friday 28 October, 8.45-10pm. To reserve a place at this event and to receive a copy of the full FLIP festival programme contact Wendy Jones on 01902 716055, email: flip@light-house.co.uk

Award-winning Animation to be screened at FLIP
Wolverhampton-based animation company Screenburn Ltd will screen their award-winning short film Little Angel at the launch of the FLIP festival on Thursday 28 Oct. Little Angel is a tale of a little devil who grows up in an angelic family but despite its good intentions, good deeds always seem to go wrong. The film won three awards at the FILMid Short Film Festival in Birmingham recently. They were voted Peoples Choice, won Best Animation and were the Overall Festival Winner.

Stuart Barnecutt of Screenburn said, ‘We're delighted to be recognised amongst so many great films. We've been asked to show Little Angel at festivals across the world and have even been invited to Monte Carlo next year as one of Europe’s key animation studios. I think it's a sign that the West Midlands is becoming a formidable player in the animation sector’.

The FLIP launch is on Thursday 27 Oct, 7-9pm at the Custard Factory in Birmingham. To reserve a place at the festival launch contact Wendy Jones on 01902 716055, email: flip@light-house.co.uk

Animators Survival Guide to the Midlands
The West Midlands has a small but growing animation industry, but all too often animation graduates head for the south in order to further their careers. The FLIP Animation Festival at Light House Media Centre, Wolverhampton (27-29 Oct 2005) will address some of the issues facing animators in the region, promote some of the support available to people wanting to get into the industry and provide some inspiration from respected industry experts such as Alan Batson, representatives from BBC Three, Skillset, Screen West Midlands, Channel 4, NESTA and animation companies.

Peter McLuskie, FLIP Director said, ‘Hopefully FLIP will be the catalyst for more animation activity in Wolverhampton and the West Midlands, particularly in terms of attracting funding for film development. Light House has recently created an animation bursary scheme, which will hopefully continue as a regular opportunity for up and coming animators. The combination of animation training at Light House, the animation bursary scheme, Light House's support for animation companies and the FLIP animation festival will provide a support mechanism for animators in the region and will encourage young people to consider a career in this field’.

Booking recommended for all events, ticket prices vary. For a full festival programme and to book contact Wendy Jones on 01902 716055 or email: flip@light-house.co.uk

The programme is packed with screenings, debates, hands-on workshops, demonstrations and opportunities to hear from industry specialists - a must for all animation fans. As well as films by professionals from around the world, people will also get the chance to see entries in the Student Animation competition, featuring work by students from the University of Wolverhampton, Staffordshire and UCE and short films produced by schoolchildren from across the West Midlands.

Other festival highlights include the Regional Animation Showcase, Student Screening and Awards, panels, industry debates, workshops for teachers, drop-in workshops for families, screenings: including Channel 4’s AIR and Animate! schemes, the festival premiere of E4’s Estings competition; BBC Three New Animators Awards; SE3D Showcase and FLIP Fair with stalls and demonstrations. The festival kicks off at The Custard Factory in Birmingham on Thursday 27 October at 7pm.

Stuart Barnecutt, of Screenburn animation studio, who took part in last year’s festival said, ‘Flip is great opportunity for animators to get their work seen. It was good to see such a strong selection of companies and visitors from outside the region…it’s very important to bring companies such as ourselves together with other businesses in the same area, as well as future talent’.

Wolverhampton Schools Make Animated Films
In the run up to the second FLIP Animation Festival (27-29 Oct 2005), children from five Wolverhampton schools are making animated films, with help from animators from Light House. The project, entitled ‘Magic Box’ is part-funded by Wolverhampton City Council and Light House Media Centre, organisers of the FLIP festival.

Each school is given a ‘Magic Box’ full of weird and wonderful objects, from which they must create a story and characters. They must then incorporate the objects into the final animated films, which can be on any subject. The animators will help the children to come up with stories and characters, make storyboards and create the final films.

The finished films will be shown at FLIPPERS; a special screening for the children, their friends and families as part of the FLIP Animation Festival at Light House, on Saturday 29 October.

Kathryn Beattie, Exhibitions & Educational Projects Co-ordinator said, ‘The Magic Box project has been organised to introduce children to basic animation techniques, inspire them to learn further and give them an opportunity to bring their ideas to life in an informal, fun atmosphere’.

Light House has a long tradition of working with schools on multimedia projects, showing how animation can enhance the curriculum and encourage children of all ages and abilities to think creatively.

A DVD compilation of the Magic Box films is available, priced £2.99. To order your copy, please contact Kathryn Beattie on 01902 716055, email: kathryn@light-house.co.uk
