Ratatouille (U)

A mouthwatering concoction of fantastic Pixar animation, endearing characters, a strong story and good humour served with flair. Ratatouille tells the story of Remy, a plucky French rodent who dreams of becoming a great chef against his family's wishes and despite the problem of being a rat in a decidedly rodent-phobic profession

Student Showcase & Competition
10.30 -12.00
This screening will showcase the 25 top films submitted by Staffordshire University, the University of Wolverhampton, Derby University, the University of Central England and Liverpool Hope University. This is an opportunity to check out some of the upcoming talent from around the region and beyond.
This year’s judges are Myles and Greg from The Brothers McLeod, Chris Randall from Second Home Productions and Dave Ledsum from Screenburn.

Stop Motion Forever
12.30 - 4.15
This afternoon’s extended session focuses on stop motion animation and includes speakers, screenings and an exhibition of models from Mackinnon & Saunders
12.30 - 4.15: exhibition presented by Nick Roberson from Mackinnon & Saunders who design and build animation puppets, models and maquettes. The exhibition will include work from The Corpse Bride, Mars Attacks, Andy Pandy, Max & Co; more to be confirmed. Nick will set up the display in the cinema and will be available to talk about his work 12.30 - 1.30.

Followed by 3 presentations:
1.30 - 2.00: Talk and screening by Chris Randall from Birmingham based Second Home Productions. Stop Motion and 2D animation is one of Chris’ main areas of expertise and has a history in broadcast design, including network commercials and a substantial body of work for Children’s ITV. The ‘Animal Book’, is the studios first short film animation and has already been selected for Edinburgh and Soho Shorts and is in competition at Flip 2007.

2.00 - 2.30: Talk by Jud Walton, who has been a professional stop motion animator for 9 years at HOT Animation. He has worked on a range of series, including Bob the Builder, Rubberdubbers, Pingu, and was involved in the feature animation, Max & Co, produced by Swiss based production company Cinemagination

2.30 - 3.00 Illustrated talk by Nick Roberson, Lead Sculptor and Painter at Mackinnon & Saunders, who has worked on a range of high profile feature films and TV series, including The Corpse Bride, The League of Gentlemen Film, Bob the Builder, Pingu, Andy Pandy, and the Koala Brothers.

These presentations will be followed by a round table discussion on the future of Stop Motion and its relationship to contemporary techniques and software.


Open Shorts, Competition
4.30 - 6pm
This screening will feature a selection of films which have been chosen for competition. A number of the films have already reaped numerous awards at festivals, including, Ian Mackinnon’s, Adjustment, which has picked up more than 8 international awards; Slinky Pictures’, The Wrong Trainers, a double award winner in the TV specials category at this year’s Annecy International Animation Festival; Isabel Herguera’s La Gallina Ciega, which has received 18 festival citation. The screening includes premieres; look out for My Brown Friend, by Stephen Spencer and It always Rain on a Sunny day in London, by Joe Lea.

Bafta presents
7.00 - 9pm
in Conversation with Barry Purves
Flip is delighted to welcome contemporary master of puppet animation Barry Purves. Barry has been animating for nearly 30 years and has worked on films for children, including the recent Rupert Bear series); commercials; pop videos; Hollywood films (Mars Attacks and King Kong); and for studios such as Aardman and Cosgrove Hall. He has written and directed his own films which have received over 60 international awards. Barry has recently completed a new book due to be released in December 2007. Stop Motion: Passion, Process and Performance is a generously illustrated book offering advice and insights from various stop motion animators including Tom Brierton, Adam Elliot, Mark Hall, Peter Lord, Ken Priebe and David Sproxton, among others.
This evening will include screenings and clips of some of Barry’s work, including Wind in the Willows, Next, Achilles, Gilbert & Sullivan and Rupert; as well as conversation, reminiscence and insights into contemporary puppet and stop motion animation along with plenty of opportunities for questions and answers.
Barry will be around to present awards and has kindly donated a signed copy of his new book, Stop Motion: Passion, Process and Performance.
